Headband Instructions

These two headbands are very quick and easy to make. 

For the reversible headband, you need scraps of two different fabrics (if you wish to purchase material you only need 1/8 yard), 5 inches of 3/8" elastic, and thread.

For the wrap headband, you need a large fabric scrap (if you wish to purchase material you only need 1/4 yard), 5 inches of 3/8" elastic, and thread. If you are using a light fabric, you also need a small scrap of a stronger fabric (like corduroy or denim). 

Reversible Headband

Step 1: With the right sides together, stitch the two pieces together (1/2" seam allowance) leaving three gaps (indicated by arrow-like things): two on each end for the elastic and one in the middle to turn the thing right side out.  
 
Step 2: Pin a safety pin to each end of the elastic. Thread it into the headband.  
 
Step 3: Stitch across the elastic and both layers of fabric once on the seam line, and again 1/4" away from the seam to make sure the elastic is really secure.  

 Step 4: Using the safety pin as a guide, pull the other elastic end through the other end gap. Be aware not to let the elastic twist in the inside while you're doing this. Stitch the elastic into the gap like above.  


 Step 5: Turn the headband right side out through the gap in the stitching in the middle. Check that the elastic is the correct tightness before continuing. 

Step 6: Press the seams flat and topstitch around all the edges. Be cautious when pressing the seam allowances in the gap that the edges stay even. There is no need to slip stitch the gap closed; the topstitching takes case of this.  








Wrap Headband


 Step 1: Start on the reinforcement piece (pattern piece 2). Press both ends under, and then press the raw edges to meet at the center. (sorry about the fuzzy pictures here - see step 2 for clarification if needed) 

  
 Step 2: Line the reinforcement piece along the center of the inside piece of the headband. Baste in place using either iron-on basting (like Stitch Witchery, used in the picture) or baste with thread.  

Step 3: Topstitch the reinforcement piece into place. Stitch along all four side. Tuck one end of the elastic between the two layers of fabric at the ends as shown (see picture below). Check the tightness of the elastic, and adjust if necessary. Then do another row of topstitching along the elastic end to keep it secure (picture at lower left).  
   
 Step 4: To sew on the outer piece, start by stitching the ends together.  
 
Step 5: Then stitch up the middle part, remember to leave a small gap to turn the headband right side out. Be careful not to catch the elastic or extra folds of fabric.  
 
Step 6: Clip the corners on the ends as shown and turn the headband right side out.  
 
Step 7: Press the seams flat and topstitch all the way around. Viola! Finished!
