Instructions for a Panelled Lunch Bag

 Step 13: Sew the bag front and back constrast (piece #5) to the front and back panels (pieces #4). Use a 1/2" seam allowance. Place piece 5 in the middle with pieces 4 on each side. |
Step 14: Press the seam allowances toward the outside, and topstitch in along the fabric side. |
 Step 15: Being assembling the insulation/batting. You cut out three pieces of insulation from pattern piece #6. Cut one piece in 1/2 width-wise and place each half on 1/2 of the other pieces, as shown. Zig-zag stitch in place. This provides extra insulation to the bottom of the bag while reducing bulk on the top. You should two of these insulation panels; one for the front and one for the back. Step 16: As above, but for the bag sides and bottom. You cut one 36" by 5" piece of batting, and a 18" by 5" piece of batting (pattern piece #3"). Center the smaller piece on the larger piece, and zig-zag stitch in place. This serves the same idea as step 15. |
 Step 15: Line up the batting pieces with the fabric pieces. Clip the corners of the insulation to reduce bulk, and baste together. |
 Step 16: Sew the bag back and front to the sides. Begin by pining the ends together and work your way to the middle. When you get to the corner, you will need to clip the side piece. Coming from the top, you need to make a 1/2" clip into the side piece 1/2" away from the front corner. |

 Sew in both the front and the back and turn. Step 17: Repeat step 16 for the lining sides (piece 3) and front and back (pieces 6). Don't add any batting though; the insulation you added to the fabric pieces is enough. |
 Step 18: Sew the facing pieces together (pieces #7) end to end, using a 1/2" seam allowance, with right sides together. Press the seam allowances open |
Step 19: Baste the facing to the lining along the top edge, right sides out. Place the facing seam in the middle of the lining front and back to reduce bulk when you add the straps. |
 Step 20: Press the lower facing raw edge under, and topstitch. Closer detail is shown in the picture below. |
 Step 21: Stitch 2" long of velcro to the front inside of the lining. Repeat for the back. |
 Step 22: Baste the straps along the top edge to each side of the bag as shown. |
 Step 23: Turn the lining inside out and place in the bag, lining up the top edges. Pin together, and stitch. Leave an opening of 3-4" to turn right side out. |
 Step 24: Turn right side out, pull the straps out and press the fabric back. Topstitch along the top seam, including over the straps which have been pulled out. This stitching closes the opening you left to turn the bag. |
 Step 25: Attach the buckle and enjoy! Keep in mind that you have not waterproofed this bag, so it's a good idea to keep things that might leak or swear in a zip-lock bag inside this one. Finish this pattern? Send me a photo -- I'll post it here along with any comments. |
