Instructions for Felt and Fleece MP3 Player Case no. 2 - for squarish players

MP3 player cases that fit the Rio Karma are hard to come by - if you're handy with a sewing machine, here's how to make your own.

Also check out MP3 Player Case #3 for Rio Karma - it's a different style which may be more or less what you're looking for.

For this project, you need scraps of wool felt, fleece, clear vinyl, and a button. You can substitute any other fabric that won't ravel (like vinyl or sueded fabrics).

IMPORTANT: The synthetic "craft" felt may scratch the finished of your player. Don't use craft felt as a liner. I've used 100% wool felt as a liner and never had any problems with scratching.

Getting Started NOTE: Before you begin, notice there are lots of small holes that are finished by simple straight stitching. While in the instructions I cut all the holes out and then do the stitching (which works quite well with this fabric combination) you may choose to do the straight stitching around the small holes first and then make a nice cut.

Step 1: Cut out 1 of piece #1 out of felt, and 1 of piece #1 out of fleece, including all the little holes.

Step 2: Stitch the two pieces together back to back, leaving the hole for the screen and the stick UNSTITCHED. I used a decorative stitch around outside and a straight stitch around the hole for the power button and for the headphone jack.

Step 3: Cut a piece of vinyl larger than the screen window. It's okay if it pokes over into the stick window, you can trim it out in step 5.

Step 4: Slip the vinyl between the two layers and stitch into place by using a straight stitch round the edges.

Step 5: Trim the extra vinyl out of the stick window and stitch the two layers together.

Step 6: Cut out a 3" strip of seam binding or a fabric that won't stretch out of place, and a slightly larger piece of the outside fabric.

Step 7: Stitch these two layers together

Step 8: Fold in half and stitch to the back using the "checked box" pattern. This is the loop to attach the carabiner or other book.

Step 9: Cut out 1 of piece #2 out of felt, and 1 of piece #2 out of fleece and stitch together, including all the holes.

Step 10: Using a straight stitch, stitch the front piece to the back piece using a 3/16" seam allowance (or in other words, very close to the edge).

Step 11: Stitch all three side of piece #2 in the same way.

Step 12: Add a buttonhole to the tab.

Step 13: Add the button to the back and clip on a carabiner. You're done!
