New and Improved mp3 Player Case For squarish players This "new and improved" case is easier to make than the old design, and it can be made so all the controls and jacks on the device are accessible while it's in the case. This case closes when the loops at the top are joined in the carabiner, which can be used to attach the case to a bag, belt or waistband. There is a protective vinyl cover over the screen. Not the sewing type? Visit the shop or e-mail me (info@savvyseams.com) to order a custom case. Materials: * 1/4 yard of wool felt or other non-raveling fabric * enough interfacing for one pattern piece * clear vinyl scrap * thread * large carabiner (the carabiners actually made for climbing tend to be a better size than the ones made for keychains) IMPORTANT: The synthetic "craft" felt may scratch the finished of your player. Don't use craft felt as a liner. I've used 100% wool felt as a liner and never had any problems with scratching. Download the pattern (PDF format) Click here for text-only printable instructions. Step 1: Trace the pattern onto mid-weight interfacing, pin to two layers of felt and cut along the outside line, and also cut out the holes.. Step 2: Move the bottom layer of felt up to the top, sandwiching the interfacing between the two felt layers and pin. Step 3: Topstitch close to the edges to keep all the layers together. Step 4: Cut a square of vinyl for the window, with as large of margins as can fit between the layers. The vinyl will be poking into the opening for the stick - that's okay, you'll cut out the excess later. Step 5: Pull the vinyl fairly taut and pin in place as shown (remember pin holes in vinyl are permanant - don't pin into the window!). Step 6: Use a smaller stitch length straight stitch and stitch through all layers around the window to secure the vinyl. Now cut out the vinyl protruding into the stitck opening. Step 7: Using the same straight stitch, stitch around the stick opening to secure all the layers together. Step 8: Using a stitch that will bind the outer layers together, such as a zig-zag, triple stitch zig-zag, or blanket stitch, sew around the whole outside edge of the case (close-up of the two back straps). Step 9: Use the same type of stitch around the stick opening. Step 10: Use a satin stitch or very small zig-zag stitch around the power jack opening. Also, if you choose to make either the full bottom opening, or an opening for the lock, use the same method to secure the layers together. Step 11: Fold the front strap down towards the inside, at the fold line as indicated on the pattern. Stitch the end in place. The front side looks like this. Step 12: Repeat for both of the back straps. The back looks like this. Step 13: Sew up the sides. Align the front and back sides along their straight edges as shown. Step 14: Straight stitch close to the edge. Repeat for the other side and check the fit. The device should fit very snugly in the case. If it is too loose, stitch again close to the original stitching. If the fit is fine, stitch over your original stitching once more. And that's your case! Thread the carabiner through the three loops at the top and you're ready to rock :)
