Recommended out of print books:
Although these books are out of print, they can easily be found through Amazon.com used books, BookFinder, Abe Books, Alibris and eBay.- Costume Patterns and Designs - by Max Tilke. This is a classic book featuring beautiful plates which show the textiles, designs, and assembly of costumes from the whole world over, including all those places usually not included in our costume history books.
- Peasant Chic - by Ester Holderness, 1977. A guide to making unique clothing using traditional folk designs." It has good instructions on how to draft patterns for and construct a variety of clothing and bags for men and women. Also includes instructions for knitted and crocheted projects.
- Ethnic Costume - by Lois Ericson and Diane Ericson, 1979. "Clothing designs and techniques with an international inspiration." Much like the book above, this is a "how-to" book that is aimed at someone with average sewing skills. There are lots of different clothing ideas and techniques (like reverse applique) in the book.
- Smocks and Smocking - by Beverley Marshall, 1980. This book has wonderful designs and ideas along with the history of smocking.
- The Art of Sewing - published by Time-Life books, 1975. This is a 15 volume series, consisting of, in no particular order: Decorative Techniques, Traditional Favorites, Creative Design, Novel Materials, Exotic Styling, Shortcuts to Elegance, The Classic Techniques, Basic Tailoring, Restyling Your Wardrobe, The Personal Touch, The Sporting Scene, Delicate Wear, Separates That Travel, Boutique Attire, and The Custom Look. These are the best sewing books I've seen. Although the designs that are shown in the book may be quite dated, the techniques, from sewing to tailoring to knitting to crocheting are still the same.
